If you use DMchat on the ALTOs to TELNET to SAIL, you can declare yourself
to SAIL as a DM (TTY DM) and then use the unlabelled keys as:
top = null
middle = <talk to DMchat for commands>
bottom = edit
HOLD/UNHOLD is gotten with CTRL-←. CLEAR is gotten with CTRL-↑.
Then you just use the Alto just like you would an EDIT-key DM.
Note also that you can get the Alto to print the full Stanford character set
if you tell SAIL that your terminal knows about all of the characters, by
saying TTY DM128 rather than TTY DM.
Or you can use TALK to get to SAIL from an Alto, as explained below.
*13 Sep 1981 TALKing to SAIL from an Alto WIN
You can now use the Sail display service from the "Talk" program
on an Alto. It is Talk.Boot on the netexec, and Talk.Run on most
local disks. Make sure you have the latest version from
[Lassen]<Alto>Talk.Run. Just say "Talk Sail", and tell SAIL you
are a teleray 1061 (TTY TELERAY).
The blank keys in talk mean:
top = previous window
middle = EDIT (turn on 0200 bit)
bottom = next window
You can talk to any host on SUNet, with windows of any size. For example,
"Talk sail 52" gives you one large window, for which you can tell sail
"TTY TELERAY 52". "Talk shasta,sail,diablo" will open three windows, one
to each host. The Vax systems automagically know you are running talk.
